Seasoned campaigner Vijayakumari GK struck gold in record time to pocket the women’s 200 metres title on the opening day of the 51st Bangalore University inter-collegiate athletic championship, here at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Monday.
A student of the Kempegowda Institute of Management Studies & Research, Vijayakumari, was in her elements as she raced to the finish line in 24.70 seconds, squashing the nine-year-old mark of 24.90 seconds set by Bindu Rani of SBM Jain College in 2006.
Saujanya KG of Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College won the sliver in 25.90 seconds, while Ompriya of Aakash International Business Management College completed the podium in 29.10 seconds.
Scorching heat
On a day that saw athletes pull out and faint in their quest to complete the long distance races under the scorching heat, Sachin Gowda of Al-Ameen college looked comfortable as he clinched the 800 gold, setting a new meet record in the process.
Gowda won the yellow metal in 1:53.1 seconds, overhauling the previous best of 1:53.7 set by Bharath KA of Gupta College on 2013.
Another Al-Ameen athlete, Pruthvi GL, won the sliver in 1:54.6 while D Dinesh Babu of KGF First Grade College finished third in 2:04.1.
