World Series Hockey (WSH) on Thursday announced a cash bonanza for the Indian hockey team members who have signed up for the league.

Under WSH's incentive campaign -- Strive for Gold -- if the team wins a gold medal in the Olympics, a prize of Rs 2 crore will be “equally divided” among the WSH players in the team. A silver will fetch them Rs 1 crore and a bronze Rs 50 lakh.

For qualifying for the Olympics, Rs 5 lakh will be given to every WSH player in the team. The qualifier will begin from Saturday at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

Interestingly, the WSH's announcement comes a day after International Hockey Federation (FIH) reiterated its stand on the league, despite a Delhi high court ruling in its favour, by calling it an “unsanctioned” event.

Yannick Colaco, COO, Nimbus Sport, said the campaign is to motivate the players to do their best.

“The legacy of Indian hockey at the Olympics is unmatched with the national team winning 11 medals, including 8 gold medals. WSH is committed to promote hockey and hence has launched an incentive campaign — Strive For Gold — to motivate the Indian team to play their best,” Colaco said in a statement.

The WSH, a joint initiative of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Nimbus Sport, will be held from February 29 to April 2 and will involve 200 Indian and international players in a 59-match format.
