Leading specialty glass and ceramics-maker Corning Inc has announced a new generation of high strength glass cover for mobiles.
Corning's latest Gorilla Glass Ceramic is said to deliver a far better drop performance on rough surfaces compared to competitive aluminosilicate glasses.
During the tests, Gorilla Glass Ceramic is said to have survived 10 repeated drops from one meter on asphalt-like rough surfaces. An alternative aluminosilicate glass typically failed on the first drop, the company said.
“Gorilla Glass has built a reputation of strength and resilience, and our new glass ceramic material continues this tradition. Designed to offer enhanced toughness, Gorilla Glass Ceramic reinforces our commitment to innovating and engineering high-quality, durable materials for display covers and enclosures,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass.
However, the latest Ceramic glass cover is said to be very different compared to the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 we see in Samsung's premium Galaxy phones and the Ceramic Shield, the custom-made protective gear used exclusively in Apple's iPhones.
Also, there is no official word if the new generation Ceramic Glass is on par or better than Corning's current Gorilla Glass versions seen in premium phones.
Corning Inc. has confirmed that the latest Gorilla Glass Ceramic will be coming with Motorola's next premium phone in the coming months.
