Google Cloud has announced the launch of Gemini Code Assist, a generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)--based bot that can help programmers to develop software.
As per Google-commissioned DORA research report, more than 75 per cent of developers worldwide use gen AI applications to write efficient codes for software programmes. Also, 25 per cent of the codes created at Google too, is generated by gen AI tools.
But, gen AI-based applications for coding are very expensive and can only afforded by large corporations for their employees.
Now, Google Gemini Code Assist is being offered free for individual users. This will greatly help freelance software developers and talented students who crave to develop apps of their own.
"We fine-tuned the Gemini 2.0 model for developers by analyzing and validating a large number of real-world coding use cases. As a result, the quality of AI-generated recommendations in Gemini Code Assist is better than ever before and ready to address the myriad of daily challenges developers face, whether they’re hobbyists or startup developers.," said Ryan J. Salva, Senior Director, Product Management at Google Cloud.

Some of the rival brands offer limited access to their applications with up to 2,000 code completions per month.
However, with Google's Gemini Code Assist, individual users get up to 180,000 code completions per month. It is said to be almost 90 times more than what other popular free coding assistants in the market can offer.
That's not all; users can make good use of Gemini Code Assist to find bugs. It will offer logical explanations and help come up with more efficient code. It can also be used to learn coding as well.
Students can conveniently learn, create code snippets, debug and modify their existing applications with Gemini Code Assist.
Google Cloud also announced Gemini Code Assist for GitHub users in a public preview. It provides free, AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories.
Gemini Code Assist supports more than 20 programming languages and can now be installed (from here) as add-on on Visual Studio Code, GitHub and JetBrains IDEs (Integrated Development Environment).
