With the advent of generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) features in 2022, big tech companies have been advocating that the AI tech will not only enhance user experience in personal day-to-day life but also improve productivity at the office.

Major firms such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Apple and others have integrated gen AI in almost every compatible application on Windows, Android and iOS/iPadOS/macOS platforms.

Now, Google DeepMind, the creator of Gemini AI is reportedly working on a new technology that can mimic the writing of the subscriber and auto reply to people via email, Demis Hassabis, the head of Google DeepMind confirmed at SXSW London festival.

Already, Gmail has been integrated with Gemini AI, which offers a smart compose option to draft a professional email with correct grammar. It can even summarise long-threaded emails.

Also, it can offer smart replies with pre-set words with correct context so that users do not waste time typing a response. When a user taps the reply button, it shows a set of words at the bottom and the user can just select and hit the send button instantly.

With the next-generation Gmail, users can automate their responses. And, he/she need not have to look at the email, Gmail will intuitively understand the context of the message and respond in an appropriate tone of the owner's writing style.

Hassabis added that Google DeepMind wants to bring a universal digital assistant that can take care of mundane stuff and let the device user focus on more important work.

"I’m very excited about the idea of a universal AI assistant that knows you really well, enriches your life by maybe giving you amazing recommendations, and helps to take care of mundane chores for you,” The Guardian reported Hassabis as saying at SXSW London festival.

The features mentioned above can only be achieved when AI tech gains Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capabilities, where it can make decisions by itself. However, Hassabis noted that AGI is at least five to 10 years away.

There needs to be more testing and has to build multiple levels of safeguards to ensure AGI is always under the control of human managers.
