A moderate 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's West Papua province today, the US Geological Survey reported, sending panicked residents rushing outdoors.

The quake, which struck at 1556 pm local time near the town of Manokwari in eastern Indonesia, had residents leaving homes and buildings, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

"I was outside my house when the ground began to shake. I ran indoors to grab my three grandchildren who were napping inside and rushed back out," said Leo Ayomi, a 60-year-old grandmother.

The quake struck 92 kilometres west of Manokwari at a depth of 24 kilometres
