The Labour party today suspended its MP Eric Joyce after Scotland Yard arrested him for assaulting a Conservative MP and others in a bar in Westminster, in front of several members of parliament and their guests.

Scotland Yard confirmed the incident in the Stranger's Bar within the House of Commons, but did not name the arrested MP or the victim, who have been identified online as Labour MP Eric Joyce and Conservative MP Stuart Andrew.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We were called at approximately 10.50 pm last night to reports of a disturbance at a bar within the House of Commons.

"A man aged in his 50s was arrested by officers on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody in a central London police station. Inquiries are continuing".

The Labour party party said Joyce had been suspended until the police investigation was complete.

Joyce is alleged to have "just started lashing out at people".
Drinks were reportedly thrown over people present in the bar, which is reserved for MPs and their guests.

According to the BBC, Stuart Andrew, the Conservative MP for Pudsey, West Yorkshire, has alleged that he was assaulted.

Joyce, who is the MP for Falkirk since December 2000, resigned in 2010 as the shadow Northern Ireland minister.

He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to ministers.
