Dawn quoted official sources as saying that the destruction of two P3C Orion aircraft will affect the Pakistan Navy's counter-terrorism and surface and underwater reconnaissance operations for the time being.

A group of terrorists had stormed PNS Mehran in Karachi Sunday night and targetted the surveillance aircraft. Ten security personnel were killed in the 15-hour long siege that ended Monday afternoon.

The media report said that there were five P3C Orions in the navy and four more were being modified in the US.

The aircraft is capable of surface and underwater reconnaissance and anti-submarine operations.
