A man has approached a Pakistani court seeking the disqualification of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on the ground that a firm owned by her husband has failed to pay electricity bills of around Rs 70 million.

Mian Asad filed a petition in the Lahore High Court that alleged a company owned by Khar's husband had not paid its dues to the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company.

Asad contended that under Article 63 of the Constitution, a parliamentarian stands disqualified if the lawmaker or his spouse or any of his dependents default on payments. The High Court yesterday adjourned the hearing on the request of Asad's counsel. The date of the next hearing will be fixed later, court officials said.
