American Automobile Giant GM, which had announced its intent to close down its Halol unit in Gujarat two years ago, will finally down shutters at its unit on Friday.

The auto major had announced its plans to consolidate its production by shutting down its oldest facility in the country at Halol and move production to its facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra.

GM had earlier suspended production of its sedan Cruze at Halol some time ago, and is slated to stop manufacturing of its utility vehicle Tavera from Friday.

The closure comes amidst stand-off with its employees over remuneration. Over 600 workers, employed at Halol, have been demanding higher remuneration under the voluntary separation scheme (VSS).  Though the management had earlier said that it would support smooth transition, it is yet to reach a final settlement.
