Tech company puts recruitments on hold after AI overuse by candidates

In a recent interview process, a tech company did not to recruit any employee for a junior developer role, citing over reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) toold.

In a LinkedIn post, the company announced applications for the role of Junior Frontend/Backend Devs and QA roles. They received over 12,000 applicants out of which they short-listed out 10,000.

Though the company said the use of GPT to solve problems was not prohibited, the need to explain the code was essential, which many candidates failed to do.

Candidates also used the method of “copy-pasting” the code from AI without making an effort to understand it or the relation of one line to the other.

"We're starting to question whether we're making mistakes in our hiring process, or if it's just high time for junior devs to realize the importance of actually understanding the code before pasting it from GPT," the company issued a statement which was reported by multiple media sources.

The post has created a controversy with many suggesting that the company should re-evaluate its interview process and make changes.

"Evaluate your interview process. Highly inefficient. Don't blame the candidates. There are serious expectations mismatch," commented one user.

The company replied to this by saying "The entire point is people are going to use AI anyways in their Jobs as well as everyone does, so there is no point in saying to them that do not use AI to write code in the interviews as well. The candidate should understand the solution and the logic behind each and every line, that is our only concern."

Some online users even agreed with the company's argument saying, "Truly agree, candidates nowadays are missing on core fundamentals. Your HR team can try to implement a resume shortlister and a tech assignment round before F2F."
