DH Changemakers 25

Dear Reader,
On the cusp of the new year, it is our honour to bring you the stories of extraordinary individuals and initiatives that have transformed communities, countered discriminatory practices and wrought innovative solutions. DH’s Changemakers, in its seventh year, focuses on these efforts that inspire hope and, even better, action.

Since 2019, we have identified and spotlighted pioneers in various fields such as science, sport, music, human rights, public health and urban planning. From across the state, these innovators have stood up to seemingly insurmountable odds, and have, by their grit, overcome social, financial and personal barriers.This year, the process began in August, with over 500 nominations, followed by several rounds of scrutiny and discussion.

The jury comprised Baduku Community College founder Anita Ratnam, thinker and cultural activist Padma Shri G N Devy, NIMHANS Director Dr Pratima Murthy, and writer and publisher Vasudhendra. Following rigorous consideration, the jury zeroed in on 15 Changemakers. The list includes a revivalist protecting Bidar’s heritage water structures, former bonded labourers working to ensure others can experience freedom too and a queer writer bringing new perspectives and thoughts to Kannada literature.

The youngest, an 18-year-old, advocates for persons with hearing impairment to have access to affordable health services. From conservationists and veterinarians to educators and artists, one thread weaves this cohort together — the ability to identify the need for change, the conviction to own the problem and the determination to see a solution through. It is an honour to document their work and acknowledge their remarkable journeys. Particularly in today's divisive and uncertain times, these stories underline the endurance of the human spirit and serve as a reminder of the redeeming power of good.
