Residents' fight for a better Bellandur paying off

Repeated protests and the recent human chain demonstration by the residents of Bellandur have prompted the mayor to order expediting some of the pending civic works.

A petition with budgetary requirements to clear the pending civic work in Bellandur, including garbage clearance, road repair and drainage work, submitted by the residents to the chief secretary’s office was forwarded by the local MLA to Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, the BBMP commissioner and the Urban Development Department, demanding additional funds. “Bellandur, being the biggest ward, has contributed over Rs 739 crore revenue to the BBMP over the past five years. But in turn, only Rs 73 crore has been sanctioned by the government for its development in the same five years,” the petition said.

Mayor’s assurances

Residents also gave the petition to Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun on Tuesday, following which she directed the chief engineer to expedite some of the pending civic works.

The mayor agreed to personally push the implementation of the micro plan to resolve garbage issues in Bellandur.

She asked the residents to give their request, seeking additional BBMP staff in various departments, in the form of a letter to her.

She agreed to expedite work to better the subroads, major roads and PWD roads, including drains, in Mahadevapura in the coming days, assuring allocation of funds for the works in the 2019 budget. “The mayor instructed the engineers to prioritise restoration of dug up roads in Bellandur with wet mix. We shall give her an update in soon. She said she would discuss the developmental work in Bellandur with the deputy CM and ask him for funds,” a resident said.
