Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who is also the Chairman of Dasara Festival Committee had earlier approved that the programmes be conducted.

A member of the Yoga Dasara subcommittee on condition of anonymity said that around 15-20 persons were to arrive from Dharwad and Hubli to perform at the event. However, about four days ago the subcommittee was informed that funds will not be provided and the event was cancelled.

The member complained that they had only asked for the travelling expenses of about Rs 1,000 was needed for each person. But even that was not sanctioned, but instead lakhs of Rupees are being spent on other events.

However, Yoga Dasara Subcommittee, president, Dr K Raghavendra R Pai said that a team from Gadag arrived and finally instead of performing for the Dasara festivities, they performed at the Vivekananda Yoga Institute on Monday. There is going to be a performance at the Mahajana First Grade College at 11 am. Dr Pai said all they sought was travelling allowance for the performers coming from Belgaum, Dharwad, accommodation and their food. “But we don’t know the reason as to why it is was cancelled,” he added.

DC’s clarification

Speaking to Deccan Herald over the telephone, Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta said that plans are afoot to hold the ‘Malla Kambha’ programme during torchlight parade. If that is not possible, he said that it will be included in the Dasara sports itinerary. He said that there is no shortage of funds for this event.
