An US-India 'Evergreen Revolution' for food security

"We are launching a new partnership for an Evergreen Revolution that improves food security around the world," US President Barack Obama announced during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Hyderabad House here.

Obama said like the earlier collaboration between the two countries in agriculture, which ushered in the Green Revolution in India, he expected the new initiative to bring in an "Evergreen Revolution" to enhance food security.

Prime Minister Singh said that both the governments had reached an agreement for cooperation in weather and crop forecasting.

US Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communication Ben Rhodes and USAID Administrator Raj Shah had earlier said agriculture would be one of the focus areas of President Obama's visit.

"We see great potential for the US and India to cooperate, not just within India but in African countries as well, to apply the extraordinary lessons learned within India and the extraordinary innovations made by Indians to support development in other parts of the world," Rhodes had said ahead of the Obama visit.
