Speaking at the convention of patrolling committee members here on Saturday, the SP said the department aims to transform the district into a crime free zone. “We have diverted our attention to rural areas too. Patrolling has been introduced in villages. At least two personnel man a village,” he said.

Calling for an inclusive approach to tackle crime, Pawar said people should not be under the impression that only police can check criminal activities in society. While police do it with uniform, the common man can do it without uniform. Vital clues and prior information from the public can help in preempting many a crimes, he noted.

Committees formed

Patrolling committees have been formed in all the locallities and villages in the taluk. The members of the committee gather information on the residents in their respective areas. They alert police whenever needed. People should take the members of these committees into confidence.

The SP said he had come across increasing cases of gambling in villages and would initiate suitable action to curb the trend.

There has been a demand for a police outpost in Poshettyhalli and staff would be deputed as a temporary measure. Steps would also be taken to set up a women police station.

Public eye

Pawar recalled a ‘police verification’ incident by alert public recently. “During my visit to a village I had given my cellphone number and asked people to call me even at the dead of the night. Few days later, I got a call on my mobile phone at 3 am. The caller asked about my welfare etc. I questioned him whether there was any law and order problem. He said he just called to check whether I would receive call at any time.” He cited the incident as an instance of public keeping an eye on the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police H T Duggappa, Circle Inspector Shivakumar and others were present on the occasion.
