Belief in God

Last Updated 23 December 2010, 14:08 IST

He believes that God was deliberately created by those who were intelligent and in power to put the fear of God in men so that they could easily be controlled and manipulated.

It was clear from his views that he really did not believe in God and that he was an atheist.

If you were to look at the entire population of the world you will find that the number of atheists when compared to the believers is negligible. The overwhelming majority of the people believe in the existence of God and they believe that they were created by God even though the concept of God may be completely different from one belief system to another. The reason for this is generally thought to be due to their upbringing when their parents and guardians inculcated in them belief in God and in due course this indoctrination became part of their belief system and therefore most of the people are believers.

However, according to Islam the fact that God exists and that we were created by God is instilled in our very souls. There is mention of a primordial covenant between God and man in the Qu’ran, the translation of which reads:  “When thy Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam? from their loins? their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying): "Am I not your Lord (who cherishes and sustains you)?" They said: "Yea! We do testify!" (This), lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: "of this we were never mindful." (7: 172).

Therefore, the belief in God follows from our very nature when it is pure and uncorrupted and we know it by instinct. Conversely when the soul is corrupted then the consequence is that our true nature gets lost some where deep down within us and we are unable to realise its true essence.

Revelations have come to remind people of their covenant. Prophet Muhammad, like other prophets who came before him, came to remind people of that covenant which they made, but had forgotten. Those who recognised in the call of the Messengers the truth of what was already within them testified to the truth of what they had brought. This testimony in Arabic is called Al-Shahada. The Testimony (Al-Shahada) of faith in Islam is: “There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God”, La Ilaha Illa Allah, Muhammad Rasulu Allah.
