Pawar for onion exports

Last Updated 11 February 2011, 12:55 IST

"As per my request, Maharashtra Chief Minister will write to the Centre today seeking permission for the export of sugar and onions. We are going to follow up the demand at the Central government level," Pawar told reporters here.

The NCP chief said he was against foreign investments in agriculture, as he considered that to be a threat to farmers.

"Personally, I and NCP welcome foreign investments in the industry, but we are totally against the foreign investment in agriculture. We are against any type of threat to the rights of small farmers," he said.

Pawar said that his ministry intended to allow 20 food parks in the country and has already cleared 10 such proposals.

"There is no appropriate infrastructure for processing agricultural products. Lack of this infrastructure is a cause of major loss, approximately Rs 50,000 crore.

The Agriculture and Food ministry is trying to minimise this loss by permitting foodparks, cold storages, besides promoting ripping houses and export zones."
