Villagers seek solution for frequent floods

Last Updated 18 July 2009, 18:34 IST

The village has more than 80 houses. Come rainy season, the village gets submerged in the floods in Hemavathi river. Officials and elected representatives visiting the village and giving new assurances have become a common phenomenon. The houses getting inundated every year and the villagers suffering from various water-borne diseases have also become equally common.

Taluk Panchayat Member Uggihalli Rudraiah, who represents the area, led a panel comprising the TP chief and officials of the Revenue department to Uggihalli and discussed the problems with the villagers.

A group of houses had been built near Bettadamane a few years back to rehabilitate the families here, but the people were not ready to shift. Even the local MLA had tried to convince the people last year, but in vain. They have been expecting some ‘permanent compensation’ from the government.

“The houses built earlier have been damaged now and are not fit to reside. A detailed report will be submitted to the government in this regard,” said sub-divisional officer Dayanand.

Some of the villagers are of the view that they may shift if they are given sufficient land in the nearby Jenubailu village.
