Last Updated 26 May 2011, 18:01 IST

The 27-year-old doctor was working at Delhi’s Apollo hospital and pursuing his fellowship in emergency medicine.

Dr Arshad was accompanying a team of doctors and family members of a patient who was being flown from Patna to Delhi for treatment in a plane. The deceased Kashmiri doctor’s father and sister are also doctors. His body was flown to Srinagar from the  capital on Thursday afternoon and later taken to his ancestral village for burial. Large number of people from different walks of life attended the funeral.

They included separatist leader Moulana Abbas Hussain Ansari and PDP MLA Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari.

Dr Arshad did his MBBS from Romania. Doctors in his family have been treating the villagers for long time. “During the militancy, when the health services were almost paralysed, we used to visit the family for treatment,” said Reyaz Ahmad, a local resident.

Noted Kashmiri doctor in Delhi, Dr Sameer Kaul, who knew Dr Arshad personally said the latter was smart, intelligent and hard working.

Sources said only 60 per cent of the entire aircraft, including parts of its fuselage and the tail, have been found and the remaining portion, including the cockpit, has been completely damaged and charred in the blaze.
