HC notices to State, college on suicide of student

Last Updated 07 June 2011, 18:11 IST

Justice Mohan Shantangoudar issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Hanuman Singh Shekhawat, the father of the victim, Durugesh Kanwar Shekhawat, seeking takeover of his daughter’s case by either the Central Bureau of Investigation or any other independent investigative agency, for a detailed probe. “Sanjaynagar police refused to register a case against the college management when I filed a complaint. They directed me to withdraw the complaint. I decided to move the court as I had no other option,” Singh told the court.

A second semester MBBS student, Durugesh Kanwar hanged herself at her room in the college hostel (Triveni Girls’ hostel). She was accused of malpractice in the examination.  The college management refused her permission to appear for future examinations and even expelled her from the hostel. Kanwar took the extreme step as she was reportedly disappointed with the college decision, police stated in their report.

Arguing that false charges were foisted against his daughter, Singh claimed Kanwar was a meritorious student all along, and submitted copies of her marks cards to the court.

Separately, the High Court adjourned for Wednesday the hearing of petitions filed against Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and his son-in-law Sohan Kumar in connection with land scams, and one pertaining to the appointment of the DG&IGP. Advocate Sirajin Basha had moved the HC against Yeddyurappa and Sohan Kumar, while it was former Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari in the second case.
