Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra is at present the only woman judge in the Supreme Court. Besides Justice Desai, the collegium headed by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia also cleared the names of Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court S J Mukhopadhaya and Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court J S Khehar for elevation to the apex court.<br /><br />The present strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 28 and six judges are to retire within two months.<br /><br />Justice Desai is one of the two judges in a division bench of the Bombay HC that upheld the death penalty to 26/11 convict Ajmal Aamir Kasab recently. Justice Fathima Beevi was the first woman judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Sujata V Manohar and Justice Ruma Pal were the other woman judges in the apex court.</p>
