Sonia Gandhi, who arrived at Rae Bareli on a three-day visit on Monday, was told by the people at Rampur Sudakan village during a “chaupal” (village panchyat) that they were yet to be given any job under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

The women and men at the chaupal answered with a loud “No” when the United Progressive Aliiance chairperson sought to know from them if they had been getting work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Direct implementation
The villagers requested Sonia Gandhi to ensure direct implementation of centrally sponsored schemes as they did not “expect the Uttar Pradesh government to give them any thing.”The Congress president, who visited some other villages in her Lok Sabha constituency, received similar complaints there too.

The United Progressive Aliiance chairperson will visit several villages and meet a cross-section of the people besides local party functionaries during the next two days in her constituency.

Will review work
Sonia Gandhi will also review the developmental projects, including the progress of Rail Coach Factory and Petroleum Institute in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh Congress sources here said. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi was also flooded with complaints of irregularities in National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme during his visits to his recent Lok Sabha constituency of Amethi.
