Altogether 14,688 cases were reported in 2011 as against 14,966 in 2010. Among the 14,688 stolen vehicles, 9,203 were two wheelers and 5,050 were cars.<br /><br /> “Vehicle theft cases accounted for 27 per cent of the total IPC crimes registered in Delhi. The acute shortage of parking space and the general practice of parking vehicles on roadsides, coupled with the indifference of a majority of vehicle owners towards installing anti-auto theft equipment, are among the reasons for auto thefts,” B K Gupta said.<br /><br />In 2011, 2,957 (20 per cent) of stolen vehicles were recovered as against 1,892 (13 per cent) in 2010. With the recovery of stolen vehicles, police said to have busted several inter-state gangs operating in the city. The Delhi police also claimed to have arrested 3,988 auto-lifters in 2011 as against 3,258 in 2010.<br /><br />Unlike any other metro, Delhi has a traffic volume of over seven million (72.10 lakhs) vehicles moving on city roads which add up to 31,432 kilometres in length. Mumbai, with 1,941 kilometres road length, has 19.38 lakh vehicles; Chennai, with 2,847-km road length, has 29.19 lakh vehicles; and Kolkata, with 1,870-km, has 5.81 lakh vehicles.<br /><br />According to Gupta, approximately 1,300 vehicles are registered daily in the capital.
