Last Updated 22 January 2012, 20:12 IST

A 22-year-old labourer was killed and another was injured when iron rods fell from a crane installed to construct a foot overbridge in Adarsh Nagar in north-west Delhi on Sunday, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Feroze, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Panchsheel Nagar, while the injured has been identified as Wakil.

“We were informed about the incident in Azadpur at 5.30 pm. Eyewitnesses say iron rods being used for the under-construction foot overbridge fell on some labourers at the site,” a senior police officer said.

The two were rushed by their colleagues to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital in Jahangir Puri, where doctors declared Feroze as brought dead.

“Feroze received head injuries, while Wakil is undergoing treatment for minor injuries,” the officer added.

Initial investigation suggests that the mishap occurred due to a malfunction in one of the cranes employed at the site.

A case of causing death by negligence has been registered against the construction company.

According to engineers, cranes should be properly checked before they are made to be installed in construction sites to minimise the chances of accidents.

However, police said the authorities concerned must inspect all construction sites in the Capital to find out whether cranes have been installed as per norms.
