Katju offers to mediate on Cauvery

Former Supreme Court judge and Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Markandeya Katju has proposed to form and lead a team of mediators to solve the Cauvery issue, if the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments wished.

The PCI chairman was speaking to mediapersons at SDM Law College in the City on Wednesday.

Noting that the Cauvery issue could not be solved by adjudication, but mediation and conciliation would help to overcome the problem, Katju said he was ready to mediate between the two states free of cost, by holding talks with the people.

“Adjudication will not solve the problem permanently, but will only intensify the enmity.

We should learn lessons from the Assam-Nagaland border dispute, where the parties involved have opted for mediation. The chief ministers of both the states should act like statesmen in solving the issue,” he suggested.
