As the Sammelan came to an end on Sunday, an unexpected event took everybody by surprise and left a lasting impression, worth emulating.

Sammelan president Sa Raghunath was preseted with sarees and towels during the valedictory function of the Sammelan on Sunday evening.

Usually, the persons appointed president, apart from getting the felicitation are also given purse.

However, this is the first time in the history of the Sammelans that someone was given sarees and towels. The clothes were given by the Kannada Sahitya Parishath but on demand by the president.

Raghunath,  the Headmaster of the Government Upgraded Higher Primary School at Kashettipalli in Srinivaspur taluk of the district, is also a social worker.

The school, apart from imparting education is also a mini hospital which not only treats children but also other village residents. The villagers are given free medicines for minor ailments. However, nobody is charged as Raghunath gets the medicines from donors.

Raghunath, who is on a social mission, is also caring for children of nomads, orphans and beggars under Namma Makkalu, a community service scheme for many decades now. Interestingly, old people both male and female are also taken care by the Headmaster.

It is for these underprivileged senior citizens that Raghunath asked for sarees and towels.

On Sunday night, 10 sarees and 10 towels were symbolically given to him. The Parishath will in a few days time give 100 sarees and 100 towels to Raghunath, said Parishath’s district unit president J G Nagaraj.

The Parishath agreed to the request, seeing the social work of Raghunath, he added.
