Abolish death penalty: CPM

Last Updated 13 May 2013, 20:06 IST

The CPM on Monday called for abolishing of death penalty in the country and wanted it to be changed into imprisonment till death in rarest of the rare cases.

This decision was taken at a two-day Central Committee meeting that ended here on Sunday. “In India, the death penalty, as it is in practice is arbitrarily implemented. It is inhuman and after execution irreversible.

“Instead of capital punishment, the CPM wants in the rarest of the rare cases and most heinous crimes, life imprisonment to be extended for the entire life of the person convicted with no scope for remission,” General Secretary Prakash Karat said while addressing a press conference.

In the wake of a child rape incident in Delhi suburb, Polit Bureau Member Sitaram Yechury had opined that the party may consider supporting demand for death penalty in such cases.
However, the party conclusively decided against it. The BJP and Congress are supporting death penalty for such crimes.

Referring to the execution of Afzal Guru, Karat said he was denied review plea after the mercy plea was rejected. His family was also not informed about the Guru’s execution.
