Mumbai building collapse toll goes up to 10

The number of dead in the Mahim building collapse on Tuesday shot up to 10, with rescuers fearing that there may be more people trapped under the rubble and debris, even as intermittent rain showers continued to batter parts of city causing traffic jams and water logging.

A portion of a five-storey building Altaf Mansion on the fringes of the island city in suburb Mahim came down amid heavy rain on Monday night. According to the Disaster Management Cell of municipal corporation, apart from units from fire brigade, police and National Disaster Response Force, three civic teams have been working round-the-clock since Monday night in the on-going rescue operations.

Rescue operations were hampered on Tuesday morning even as clearing of debris was on another portion of now-evacuated building came down.  The injured, including a fire man, have been admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra.
