Book on Dawood Ibrahim popular with criminals in Uttar Pradesh jails

A surprise raid on the Lucknow district jail yielded something that took officials by complete surprise.

Along with cigarettes, match boxes, lighters and other usual objects, which are though banned but generally found with the prisoners, the officials also came across a book entitled ‘Dongri to Dubai’, a book on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

On further inquiry, it was found that the book had been given to an inmate of the jail by one of his acquaintance a few days back. Though the officials did not disclose the name of the prisoner from whom the book was recovered, sources said that the book had been read by several jailed criminals.

The officials have ordered a thorough probe into the matter, and the prisoner who brought the book inside the jail was being quizzed, sources said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had recently ordered that the officials must conduct regular surprise raids in jails.

Though a query on the recovery of the book in question did not elicit any response from the jail officials, sources said that the criminals might have found the book ‘interesting’ and hence their desire to read the same.

The book ‘Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of Mumbai Mafia’ by S Hussain Zaidi was the story of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim along with several other gangsters such as  Haji Mastan, Karim Lala, Abu Salem, Chota Raja and others. It traces the history of Ibrahim and his journey in the underworld.

Some of the jailed criminals may have been thinking of emulating the dreaded gangster, who is wanted by the Indian government in connection with Mumbai terror attacks and is reportedly hiding in Pakistan.
