Husband of Durga Shakti suspended

Abhishek Singh, the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district, was suspended on Saturday by the state government following complaints that he made a 55-year-old dalit teacher do sit-ups in the presence of his young son as a punishment for failing to finish the work assigned to him.

Singh is the husband of Durga Shakti Nagpal, who was suspended during her stint as SDM of Gautam Buddh Nagar for taking on the sand mafia.

According to sources, Singh summoned the teacher, Fauran Singh, to his office at 9 pm on Wednesday, after learning that the teacher did not complete the revision of electoral rolls assigned to him within the stipulated time.

“I told the SDM that I have some problem with my eyesight and am not able to see properly after dark and requested him to allow me to come the next morning (and complete it), but he kept insisting (on the punishment),” Fauran Singh said.
Fauran Singh reached the SDM's office with his 24-year-old son.

“The SDM asked me to do 100 sit-ups. I pleaded with him to give me some more time to complete the work but he threatened that he would send me to jail.

“I had to follow his orders...fortunately another official present there came to my rescue after around 25 sit-ups,” he said.

The act made him cry but the SDM remained unmoved.  Teachers associations strongly decried the official's behaviour and demanded action against him. They also threatened to boycott the electoral rolls revision work.

Taking a serious view of the matter, the state government on Saturday suspended Singh and ordered a probe into the matter.

Abhishek Singh, however, claimed that the teacher's complaint was false.

Singh's wife, Durga Shakti Nagpal, was suspended by the government last year reportedly after acting against the sand mafia, who enjoyed patronage of the ruling Samajwadi Party. The government, however, had said that she had been suspended for demolishing the walls of an under-construction mosque at a village in spite of a court order restraining such action.
