A class-XII student, who entered a freestyle fight on the street to earn some pocket money, paid with his life in Mir Chowk of the Old City here.

The WWE-style fight was reportedly organised by a group of 15 boys of the locality.

The incident took place on May 3, but came to light only on Sunday after one of the boys who was present at the fight posted the footage on social media, said V Satyanarayana, the South Zone DCP. The police have arrested seven suspects, including four minors, and decided to exhume the victim’s body for post-mortem.

The footage shows Mohammad Nabeel (17), dressed in black and white sportswear, fighting another boy, Abez Ahmad, wearing a brown trouser and a blue shirt. Another boy, Dollar Waseem, acting as a referee, whispers into their ears and leaves them to a no-holds-barred fight.

The footage also gives a running commentary of the fight, probably by the boy who was shooting it on his mobile phone. It shows the boys raining punches on each other and Nabeel collapsing on the floor.

The police said the boys then rushed him to hospital on a motorcycle, where the doctor declared him brought dead.

The panic-stricken boys then called Nabeel’s home and told his parents that he fell from a motorcycle and died. “They also didn’t file a formal complaint with the police as Nabeel didn’t have a driver’s licence,” said Dastagir, Nabeel’s father.

However, a week later, Dastagir, who returned from Dubai where he works as a driver, felt something fishy and decided to file a complaint. Meanwhile, footage of the fight, too, surfaced. The Mir Chowk police have a booked a murder case and are waiting for the autopsy report.

The South Zone police also said that the culture of street fight for money was growing in the Old City and young boys were taking to it after the police successfully put a check on speed motorbike racing. Police are also looking into other footage of such street fights.
