A 40-year-old gang leader wanted for several cases of robberies and snatchings was stabbed to death by a rival gang in central Delhi’s Nabi Karim area on Saturday evening.

Police said the murder was a result of a dispute over money made by the two gangs through robberies and snatchings in central and north Delhi.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Police said efforts are being made to identify the others involved in the murder. The victim, identified as Sheeshpal, lived in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri but his area of operation was mainly central Delhi.

He was in Nabi Karim area on Saturday evening to meet an associate when he was killed.

“Three-four men attacked Sheeshpal with knives and sticks while he was waiting to meet someone. He fought back one of them with a brick, but was eventually overpowered and killed,” a police officer said quoting an eyewitness.

Police were informed by the eyewitnesses and a team rushed to the spot. The assailants had, however, already fled by then.

The victim was rushed to a hospital in the police van but doctors declared him brought dead.

He had sustained several stab wounds in his thigh, but doctors told police he died of injuries received on his head and chest inflicted with sticks.

A background check on the victim revealed him to be involved in several criminal cases, mostly snatchings and robberies.

He was heading a gang and was involved in a long rivalry with another gang over distribution of area and money made through these crimes.

Police registered a case of murder and identified two suspects Dharmendra and Suresh. Raids at several hideouts led to their arrest from south Delhi on Sunday.

Police claimed they have confessed to their involvement in the murder.

They are being interrogated in a bid to gain the identities of the others involved in the crime.
