As many as 731 women underwent a pap smear test in what the doctors term a record cancer screening camp at Dodaballapur in Bengaluru Rural district on Monday.

According to Dr Indira, a gynaecologist who was part of the camp, never before were so many pap smear examinations have been done in the past. “In co-ordination with various private hospitals and clinics, we screened many women. They were aged between 30 and 50,”

Even as cancer is on the rise across the State, it is tough to have women come for screening, she said. “If it is for diabetes or eye examination, we see people come in large numbers. When it comes to pap smear, there is a lot of stigma attached with it. Thus, it was a great deal to even have so many people attend the camp,” she added.

A team of ten doctors from Parimala  Hospital, Cancer Care India and other hospitals in Doddaballapur along with a team of paramedics conducted the camp. The samples were sent to Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology.
