There is no witness and direct evidence to show that Bollywood actor Salman Khan was driving the car at the time of the accident, his lawyer Amit Desai told the Bombay High Court on Wednesday.
He said this during the hearing of the actor’s plea challenging his conviction in a 13-year-old hit-and-run case by the Mumbai Sessions Court in May this year.
The court had ordered a five-year jail term for Khan before it was suspended by the high court. The actor was also given a bail.
“There are no witnesses who had seen Salman Khan driving the car,” Desai told Justice A R Joshi , who is presiding over the case. One person was killed and four others were injured after Khan’s SUV lost control and ran over them while they were sleeping on a pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra in the early hours of September 28, 2002.
Desai said the prosecution relied on the evidence of police constable Ravindra Patil, who is now no more.
