Barely 18 hours after a Delhi University (DU) student posted her abuser’s photo on Facebook, the accused was arrested on Monday evening.

After reporting the matter to the police, 20-year-old Jasleen Kaur posted the photo of the accused on Facebook and wrote about the incident. The post went viral within minutes. Jasleen said she was harassed by a youth in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area who also brashly posed for a photograph when she said that she would report the matter to the police.

“He was on a silver Royal Enfield, vehicle number - DL 4S CE 3623. When I told him that im clicking his picture and I’m going to file a complaint against him, he responded by posing for the picture and said- ‘Jo kar sakti hai kar le. Complaint karke dikha, fir dekhiyo kya karta hun main (sic)’,” Jasleen wrote in her Facebook post.

The Facebook post got many people to urge for instant action. As she had lodged a police complaint along with his photograph and bike number, they managed to arrest him on Monday evening. The accused, Sarabjit Singh (26), was arrested from his house in Paschimpuri area.

“The accused was arrested and booked under Sections 354A (punishment for sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC,” said DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar.

DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar also said the Delhi Police have announced a cash reward of Rs 5,000 for the girl, a final-year English literature student of St Stephen's college.

According to the police, the matter was reported at around 8 pm on Sunday and an FIR was registered. In her complaint, the girl told the police that she was confronted by the accused at a traffic intersection in Tilak Marg, where he passed lewd remarks at her with several others looking on.
