Smart Cities: Contest for top 20 slots to begin soon

With the Ministry of Urban Development finalising the list of 98 cities under the Smart City project, the selected ones will vie with each other in the ‘City Challenge’ competition for top 20 positions.

The Centre will give Rs 2 crore each to all the 98 cities and they will have to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on their ways of development and mobilisation of the funds.

The ministry will also announce different agencies, both public and private, to assist the state governments to prepare the DPR on ways of implementing the scheme to modernise the city infrastructure in terms of water supply, sanitation, transportation, affordable housing and electricity.

Once the DPRs are tabled, they will be evaluated by an expert panel. Factors like viability of implementation, city vision and strategy, economic and environmental impacts of the plan, cost effectiveness, innovation and scalability and the process followed for preparing the DPR, including consultation of the citizens, will be taken into account for preparing the final list of 20 cities, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu told Deccan Herald.
