In its early stages the eye looks fine externally, however, as the cancer progresses, a white pearl like reflection forms within the eye.

According to a study, one in every 20,000 children is affected with this disease worldwide. In India, 1,500-1,800 children are diagnosed with Retinoblastoma. However, due to our country’s vast population, five times the number of the affected population are not diagnosed.

In order to spread awareness and provide treatment for Retinoblastoma, City-based Narayana Nethralaya has entered into an agreement with The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) in Toronto, Canada on Monday. Dr Brenda Gallie, Professor, University of Toronto, Canada will be guiding the team at Narayana Nethralaya about the treatment.

Dr Brenda Gallie is a senior scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital. She has been studying the genetics of retinoblastoma, which has contributed to the understanding of this tumour and cancer cell biology as a whole.
She has also pioneered techniques to diagnose these tumours before birth.
