'I'm happy to sing all genres'

Evergreen singer
Last Updated 17 January 2016, 18:33 IST

It’s been more than a decade since the song ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ came out and took everyone by storm but it’s still a tune that rings in everyone’s mind. Sukhwinder Singh rose to fame with that number. Ever since, we’ve heard more of his songs, with ‘Jai Ho’ from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ winning the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’. He has graced the audience with his energy for ‘The Royal Stag Barrel Select MTV Unplugged Season 5’ recently. He gets candid with ‘Metrolife’ about his love for music.

Tell us about your ‘MTV Unplugged’ experience.

I started training for this about seven months back. It was very relaxing for me as I got to sing all my popular Bollywood songs with variations and velocity. It helped me find myself as I was playing with each and every word in the song. To be honest, it felt like a magic show — similar to how magic gives you surprises, so did this experience.

What are you expectations from the year 2016?

The only expectation I have is to be with music and be stylish.

Your upcoming projects...

I have a busy year ahead already. I’m very excited to work with Vishal Bhardwaj for his upcoming movie. There’s also ‘Jay Gangajal’ that’s keeping everyone on their toes. I’m also working with AR Rahman again. But I’m not in a hurry; I want to enjoy this year with work and be relaxed at the same time. I want to go slow and steady with energy.

Your opinion about the new generation music...

Back in the day, we would sing by only using natural methods for music. We never depended on technology. But now, it’s all about technology. While there are some talented artistes, they must try to bring out their natural voices. Otherwise, they will lose their potential of their natural talent.

Any artistes you’d like to work with?

I’m very sad that I missed my chance to work with two legends — Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. If given a chance, I’d love to work with them.

Other types of genre you’d like to explore?

I’m not bound to any particular style of music. I’ve always been passionate about music and I’ll sing anything that’s been asked for me to do. So I’m happy to sing all
genres.

The motto and advice you live by...

I think it’s important to live with belief. I know that there’ll be times when I’ll lose confidence, but if I have belief, I have nothing else to fear.

If you weren’t a singer, what would have been your alternate career?

I would have been a sports person, especially a runner.
I used to be a 100 metre runner before.
