Since her role in ‘Garam Masala’, she has always been noticed, thanks to her striking performances. Having been in the film industry for a while, actress Neetu Chandra says that it is her passion for exploring herself as an actress across languages that has brought her where she is now.

.
She is elated that her production ‘Mithila Makhaan’ won the National Award for the ‘Best Film in Maithili’. In conversation with Tini Sara Anien, Neetu talks about the award, her latest projects and the movie business.

How does it feel after the award?

I’m from Bihar and it feels good to be recognised. And now after all the hard work and efforts of director and my brother Nitin, it feels great to have won an award for the production.

Where you expecting the award?

I’ve been lucky to have worked with great directors ranging from Priyadarshan to Madhur Bhandarkar. I have done a variety of characters and I know that the audience has changed according to which films have also changed. Also, one knows when one has done good work. But ours is a country where the unpredictable happens. So, one never knows. We are super-excited!

Having been in the industry for a while now, how much do you think the industry has changed?

A lot of renovation is happening in the industry in the last 3 to 4 years. Scripts have become stronger and movies like ‘Neerja’ and ‘Airlift’ are becoming popular. This by itself explains the shift well.

You have worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, among other languages Which is your favourite?

Despite being from Bihar, the Tamil industry has given me a lot of respect and great films. I’m comfortable in Hindi and can talk ‘shudh’ Hindi at any given time, so Bollywood has always been nice.

I love challenging myself and thus language isn’t a barrier. I strongly believe that ‘You are your biggest competition’.

What are the projects you’re involved with now?

I have four Hindi projects lined up, of which two are ready for release. I also have an upcoming Greek film ‘Block 12’, which is ready to hit the screens. I’m very excited as I’m getting to explore myself through different projects.

Do you still practice Taekwondo?

I am doing ‘Ladaku’ only because I still have the passion for Taekwondo. It is something that I have been doing since I was in the third grade and will continue to do so. It is something I strongly believe in.

What are your other passions?

Basket ball! I strongly believe that everyone should play basket ball. (Laughs) Families should play basket ball as it would improve the dynamics between them.

If not an actress, what would Neetu have been?

(Thinks) A housewife and mother to five kids, who would be properly trained in Taekwondo and basketball.

When not on the sets, what do you do?

I am busier when I’m not shooting. I have my yoga practice to concentrate on. I also have productions to concentrate on. I love theatre and exploring myself there as well.
