Metro 'stops' abruptly, commuters 'evacuated'

Last Updated 31 May 2016, 20:06 IST

What should you be doing if Namma Metro train, by which you are traveling breaks down in the middle? Stay calm and patient, says Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) pointing out an elaborate methodology to evacuate you safely.

During the mock drill conducted late on Tuesday night, BMRCL showcased its preparedness to send commuters safely to the nearby Metro station by deploying another train. Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola were among others who were in the train which was part of the evacuation drive. The Metro train which left Dr B R Ambedkar Metro station, Vidhana Soudha to Sir M Visveshwaraya station stopped abruptly in between due to “technical glitch and power breakdown.”

On learning about the abrupt stop of train, there were several announcements to inform commuters about the breakdown. The BMRCL even apologised for the breakdown and promised to evacuate commuters safely. Later, BMRCL officials opened one of the doors and accompanied the commuters through the walkways to another Metro train. In less than 15 minutes, commuters were evacuated to another train which was brought to the other stretch. The process did not involve any risk of life.

Earlier, Kharola said that the Metro train could breakdown for several reasons and the BMRCL is prepared to evacuate the passengers safely. It has the battery power to run AC as well as lights inside the train as well as the underground stretch for at least an hour even if the power supply stops. Commuters will have to come out of the stalled train and use the walkways which are two feet wide. People should not panic and instead walk on the walkway one behind the other as guided by BMRCL officials.
