Monsoon session: With 5 days left, govt to push for passage of key bills in Parliament

New Delhi: With just five days remaining in the Monsoon Session, the government is aiming to push through key legislative business and prevent the Opposition from continuing its protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

According to government sources, the legislative agenda includes the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, and the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, along with discussions on Naxalism and India’s space achievements. The Opposition, however, plans to continue its protest against the SIR exercise on Monday.

Sources in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs said that despite speculation about an early adjournment, the government has no plans to conclude the session prematurely. “There is a lot of business we want to conduct in the coming days,” a senior official said.

The National Sports Governance Bill 2025, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in July, and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill 2025 must be sent to a joint committee of Parliament for further scrutiny, the Opposition has demanded. While it looks unlikely that the legislation will be discussed in the lower house on Monday, with the Opposition likely to carry out protests over SIR, the government intends to see the passage of the Bills.

The government is also keen on discussing Space, including astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and the achievements of Isro in this Session.

Though the Session is officially scheduled to continue until August 21, only two working days remain this week — August 11 and 12 — with a break following for Janmashtami, Independence Day, and the weekend. Parliament will reconvene on August 18, and sit until the 21st.
