Cops were on Divyan's heels for 8 years

The CCB sleuths weren’t even aware that they would end up nabbing Divyan, the Chennai police’s most wanted Sri Lankan criminal, when they raided his flat at Prestige Collingwood Apartment.

A diploma in Electronics, Divyan, who is involved in two online frauds in Chennai, was on the run for the past eight years. He came out of prison on bail and was untracelable.

“He knew he would be deported to Sri Lanka after completing the jail term. He was at large as he wanted to remain in India,” a senior officer told DH.

Divyan, who is fluent in eight languages, including Kannada, also went by the names of Dinesh and Pulikeshi to avoid arrest, a police officer said.

Divyan, Nawaz Shariff and Nadeem Shariff became friends on Facebook. Nawaz and Nadeem face cases at the Upparpet and Cottonpet police stations for online fraud.

The trio earned between Rs 5 and Rs 10 lakh a day. They kept 20% of the money and distributed the rest among businessmen who owned PoS machines and brokers.

Tom Joe, a notorious drug peddler, had rented a flat for Rs 50,000 a month at Prestige Collingwood. The trio struck a deal with Joe and stayed at the flat on rent, while Joe shifted to Bannerghatta Road.

“They had over half a dozen girlfriends each, mainly from North India. Some of them are techies,” the officer added.

The police found syringes, condoms and drugs in a room. Nadeem built a five-storey apartment in HRBR Layout, while Nawaz too built a multi-storey residential structure.
