Abdul Basheer (47), who was brutally attacked by four persons on the night of January 3, as a revenge to the murder of Deepak Rao in Katipalla, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Mangaluru on Sunday.

Basheer, who had suffered multiple injuries, had undergone several surgeries. He was declared dead around 8 am.

A large number of people, including Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader, MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava and former minister Krishna Palemar, visited the hospital.

The people who had gathered at the hospital premises did not allow Palemar to speak to media and shouted slogans against him. ADGP Kamal Pant too visited the hospital.

Basheer, a resident of Akasha Bhavana, is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. The family members said that they will not take out a funeral procession.

The body was taken to Juma Masjid at Kuloor for burial after his son arrived from Abu Dhabi. Irfan, who works in Abu Dhabi, had gone to Emirate three months ago. A large number of people paid their respects to the departed soul.

All the assailants who attacked Basheer - Dhanush and Kishan from Padil; Srijith of Kasaragod district, Kerala, and Sandesh Kotian of Manjeshwara - were arrested on Saturday.

According to the police, the suspects wanted to take revenge for Deepak's death.

"In fact, they were familiar with Basheer's movements as they frequented his fast food joint at Kottara Chowki. They assaulted him near the Chowki."

Basheer's brother Hakim appealed to the people of the district to maintain peace and harmony.

"Injustice was meted out to my brother. We do not want our brothers and sisters from other communities to face the injustice," he said and appealed to the public not to disrupt peace in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, who visited the hospital, announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family members of the victim.
