Media should not carry 'prejudicial reports': CBI Director

"The crucial question is: Does continued dissemination of news and analysis about the accused in the media constitute a trial by media? But it may be reminded that media does carry reports prejudicial to a person in question and it certainly affects the right of that person for a fair trial.

"CBI cases as you know are complex in nature and media persons are not usually trained enough for investigation journalism. In most of the cases mediapersons are in a hurry. In such transitional settings who is going to balance news story," Kumar said while inaugurating the training module for CBI press correspondents here today.

The CBI recently faced flak for its investigations in Ruchika Girhotra case, cash-at-the-judge's door scam and Aarushi murder case, among others.

"CBI's role is basically to investigate and prosecute criminals and corrupt officials. It is not our duty to punish the accused or declare him guilty. The scrutiny of evidence and conviction fall in the duties and powers of the honourable courts.

"Secondly, we conduct our investigations as per laid down rules, norms and procedures. Our reports are submitted in writing that is, in black and white. Copies are given to the court and also copies are supplied free of cost to every accused. Therefore, it is not understood how it can be alleged that CBI conducts investigations or prosecutions stealthily at the behest of ruling party or ruling government," he said.
Kumar said "when we supply our reports to the accused persons, it is natural that they will pass comments and they even have a right to criticise our work and reports." In such cases, it is natural that some of the accused may approach the media also for highlighting their point of view, he said.

"In such situations, we feel that the media should examine the matter dispassionately and then only form its opinion. Nobody can hide the truth. Thus, it is a myth to say that CBI works at the behest of the powers that be. Our work is transparent and truthful," the Director said.
The four-day-long training would be attended by correspondents of mainstream media.
