Though SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery) has become quite a revolution in the medical field, Nephrectomy using SILS was conducted for the first time in South India by Dr Deepak Dubey, Consultant Specialist in Laparoscopic Surgery and Renal Transplant at the Hospital.

The technique is useful for kidney donors who are healthy.  "The single incision allows upgraded Laparoscopic surgery where instead of three holes; all the surgical instruments are inserted through the navel.  This procedure is safe with negligible pain and with the best cosmetic results leaving no scars on the skin," he said.

The Nephrectomy was performed on a 32-year-old working woman and a mother. Through SILS, her kidney was extracted to be transplanted to her father who was suffering from end stage renal failure.

SILS technique can be used for the removal of kidney tumour, damaged kidneys, stones in the urethra and kidneys, removal of the adrenal glands and congenital urological disorders.  Besides these, the technique can be used for Gastroenterology surgeries including intestine, pancreas, spleen, colon and routine operation like removal of gall bladder and appendix.
