Infosys to roll out social media guidelines for employees

Last Updated 14 July 2010, 03:37 IST

India's software major Infosys, whose tech-savy employees are active in various social networking sites, plans to roll out a media policy enlisting the do's and don'ts for them while interacting on such sites.

"We plan to roll out a social media policy shortly," Senior Vice-President and Global Head, Human Resources (Infosys), Nandita Gurjar said here on Tuesday. "It would be a policy akin to a code of conduct of the company and which employees would have to adhere to. Such a policy is prevalent outside India," she said.

Such a policy would make employees accountable for their comments on social media. The policy was prompted by the fact that some of the employees were found discussing projects and clients details on the networking side, which breached the clause of confidentiality.

"The policy would mainly enlist do's and don't about revealing projects or client engagements," she said. Apart from it there would be restrictions on passing personal comments about any person in the organisation. "The employees were free to air opinions but not to pass personal comments," she said agreeing there was a thin line between the two.

Those breaching the policy once implemented would face disciplinary action, including warning and in worst cases termination from services, she said.
The policy is ready and expected to be rolled out next month. A pilot project has seen the company create dedicated pages on popular social sites Facebook and Twitter to enable communication with its employees quickly. "Recently during the bandh, we let employees know that they would be closed for the day through the social networking site," she said.
