Last Updated 16 September 2010, 14:06 IST

“We have achieved the goal to stop the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)before 17 months of our commitments. Now, steps are being taken for an early phaseout of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), responsible for global warming, by 2030,” said Ramesh.
He was speaking at a function here to mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. It was on Sep 16, 1987 that the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was signed.

Ramesh said that manufacturers of high HCFCs products like air conditioners, chillers and refrigerators will have to get their processes in line with ozone friendly practices.
Ramesh also spoke about the ongoing Chiller Energy Efficiency Project that is being assisted by the World Bank to accelerate the transfer of CFC based technology into an energy efficient and environmental compliant technology.

Present in the audience were several school children who witnessed an interactive presentation on the causes and effects of ozone  depletion and the possible steps to be taken to prevent this.
