Intense campaigning in Maharashtra, Jharkhand comes to a peaceful end; voting on Nov 20

Mumbai: The campaigning for the assembly elections in Maharashtra as well as the second and final phase of Jharkhand assembly polls came to an end on Monday. 

In Maharashtra, the high decibel contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance and the ruling Mahayuti parties saw the wrestle on issues such as the Dharavi slum redevelopment, caste census etc.

Over 9.70 crore voters are eligible to cast their vote for as many as 4,136 candidates across 158 parties. Voting will take place across 1,00,186 polling stations.

In Jharkhand, where one phase of voting has taken place, the ruling JMM-Congress alliance is fighting to retain power against the BJP’s onslaught over contentious issues such as Rohingya infiltration. 

For the second phase, 528 candidates across 38 constituencies, including eight reserved for Scheduled Tribes and three for Scheduled Castes, will test their fate. As many as 1.23 crore registered voters will cast their votes at 14,218 polling stations.

Apart from that, bypolls will also take place in nine seats in the Uttar Pradesh assembly. Of the nine seats, elections to eight seats were necessitated by the election of incumbent MLAs to the Lok Sabha. These bypolls are seen as a precursor to the 2027 assembly elections in the state. 

Polling will take place on November 20, with results being declared on November 23.

Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
