Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 | 'Why President's rule not enforced yet?' Aaditya Thackeray slams Maha Yuti over delay in govt formation

Targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the largest constituent of the Maha Yuti, Thackeray claimed that to declare the swearing-in date unilaterally without even staking claim to form government is 'pure anarchy'.

Mumbai: Amid the delay in government formation in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Sunday asked as to why President’s rule has not been imposed in the state so far?

The term of the previous Maharashtra Legislative Assembly ended on 27 November and on that day Eknath Shinde resigned from the chief minister's post. Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has appointed Shinde as the caretaker CM till alternate arrangements are made.

Thackeray’s son and Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray and the close Thackeray-family aide Sanjay Raut flagged the issue.

“It has been 10 days, they have a huge majority… BJP themselves have a majority, but they haven’t formed the government yet… What is happening? State BJP President Chandrashekar Bawankule announced that on 5 December, the oath-taking ceremony will take place. Is he the Governor?… The Governor should propose the President’s rule here,” Raut said.

“In Maharashtra, such a government was in power that was wrong as per the Constitution, with the support of the Supreme Court. Former Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Chandrachud is responsible for this,” he told reporters.

”Presidential rule? Shouldn’t it have been in place by now? Wouldn’t it have been, had the opposition had the numbers, with a decision pending?,” asked Aaditya in a post on X.

“To not be able to decide on a CM, and form government, for more than a week after result day, is not just an insult to Maharashtra (for taking our state so lightly) but also to the assistance provided by their dearest Election Commission. It seems that rules only apply to the opposition parties, while rules don’t for some special ones. To declare the swearing in date, unilaterally, without even staking a claim to form government and show numbers to the Governor, is pure anarchy,” said Aaditya.

“And in all this, the caretaker CM is on a mini vacation, as per the phase of the moon, as we’ve regularly observed earlier too. In the meanwhile, Maharashtra seems like no priority for those who could form a government. They’re enjoying their Delhi trips,” he said referring to the New Delhi visit of Shinde, BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP President Ajit Pawar, in which they met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda.
